Multiyear defoliations in southern New England increases oak mortality

چکیده
After decades of multiyear defoliation episodes in southern New England, Lymantria dispar (previously gypsy moth) populations diminished with the appearance L. fungus 1989. Multiyear defoliations did not occur again until 2015–2018. To assess impact return defoliations, we examined 3095 oaks on 29 permanent study areas Connecticut and Rhode Island that were established at least 11 years before latest outbreaks. Pre-defoliation stand-level oak mortality averaged 2% (3-year basis). Post-defoliation differ between managed unmanaged stands but was much higher severely defoliated (36%) than moderate (7%) or low to no (1%). individual trees differed among species, lower for larger diameter stands. plots similar pre-defoliation levels. Following white (Quercus alba L.) northern red rubra black (Q. velutina Lam.). There weak evidence elevated basal area following severe defoliation. Natural resource managers should assume survived earlier will survive future outbreaks, possibly because are older.

The Use of Tree Shelters with Northern Red Oak Natural Regeneration in Southern New England
he use of tree shelters with naturally established red oak seedlings was studied in southern New England mixedhardwood stands where deer browsing limited regeneration height growth. Seedlings of three size classes (basal diameters of 5 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm) were cut off just above ground level during the dormant season to induce sprouting. Plastic tree shelters were placed over one group in each...
متن کاملEarly holocene openlands in southern New England.
The pre-historical vegetation structure in temperate forest regions is much debated among European and North American ecologists and conservationists. Frans Vera's recent hypothesis that large mammals created mosaics of forest and openland vegetation in both regions throughout the Holocene has been particularly controversial and has provoked new approaches to conservation management. Thirty yea...
متن کاملLoon Mortality in New England Mortality of the Common Loon in New England, 1987 to 2000
Diagnostic findings are presented on 522 common loons (Gavia immer) found dead or moribund in New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, USA) between 1987 and 2000. Common loon numbers and range in New England have decreased from historic levels over the last century due to a number of proposed factors. Goals of this study were to identify and cate...
متن کاملStumpage Prices in Southern New England (1978–2011): How Do Red Oak, White Pine, and Hemlock Prices Vary over Time?
We analyzed 33 years of red oak, white pine, and hemlock real stumpage prices—after removing inflationary effects—in southern New England. All real prices fluctuated; the real stumpage prices for white pine appear stable, hemlock decreased, but only red oak stumpage increased meaningfully over the 33-year period. This speaks to the importance of management—including silvicultural prescriptions ...
متن کاملChallenges Facing Healthwatch, a New Consumer Champion in England
This article engages with debates about the conceptualisation and practical challenges of patient and public involvement (PPI) in health and social care services. Policy in this area in England has shifted numerous times but increasingly a consumerist discourse seems to override more democratic ideas concerning the relationship between citizens and public services. Recent policy change in Engla...
